This is super easy.
The Procedure
- Open your Word document.
- From the Ribbon, click the Page Layout tab.
- On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup dialog-box-launcher icon
. The Page Setup dialog box appears. See the screenshot below.
- From the Page Setup dialog box, click the Layout tab.
- On the Layout tab, under the section Headers and Footers, select the “Different first page” check box.
- Click OK. You are done.

i want to remove header and footer from first 2 pages as 1st one is cover page & second one is for index, how can i do it, page number is also not changing in accordance to my requirement to start from 1 at page 3
Works different in Microsoft Word 2016. Double click on header or footer to bring up Tools, then select “Different First Page” and Close button.
